MANILA, Philippines – The National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs kept the University of the East (UE) Lady Bulldogs winless in the UAAP Season 76 women’s volleyball tournament, winning their second-round encounter in straight sets Sunday at the Arena in San Juan.
Skipper DinDin Santiago was brilliant from the service line in powering NU to a 25-12, 25-18, and 25-13 victory, the Lady Bulldogs’ 10th win of the season against only one defeat.
Meanwhile, UE slumped to its 11th consecutive loss.
Santiago was spectacular for NU, scoring 23 points on 13 attacks, two blocks, and a stunning eight service aces.
Santiago’s solid serving enabled the Lady Bulldogs to pull away in the first set after UE made it 9-11 following an attack from Shaya Adorador.
With Santiago at the service line, the Lady Bulldogs scored 11 straight points – including four service aces by their team captain – to break the set wide open and cruise to the victory.
The second set followed the same pattern with NU reaching set point, 24-14, off a kill by veteran Carmina Aganon. UE briefly made things interesting when Adorador keyed a 4-0 blast, but the deficit was too large to overcome.
The Lady Warriors briefly led in Set 3, even reaching the first technical timeout, 8-7, but NU soon took control after the break with Santiago this time scoring from quick hits.
With the victory, the Lady Bulldogs are now one step closer to clinching a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four.
