Big fights await Donaire, says Arum
MANILA, Philippines – Boxing promoter Bob Arum believes a bright future awaits Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. if he wins his super bantamweight debut against former world champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. this weekend.
Arum said the 122-pound division is filled with big name fighters and it will be good for Donaire.
"If Nonito wins the fight, then his next fight will be against [former WBO super bantamweight beltholder Jorge] Arce," said Arum in Ring TV.
Other intriguing match-ups for Donaire are WBC super bantamweight titleholder Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan and WBA super bantamweight Guillermo Rigondeaux of Cuba.
"Nishioka's involved and factors in, and Rigondeaux factors in. It's a hot, hot division," said Arum.
But first, Donaire would have to get past Vazquez to win the vacant WBO super bantamweight crown.
Donaire is Ring Magazine’s top 4 pound-for-pound fighter and the reigning WBC and WBO bantamweight champion.
A win over Vazquez would make him a 4-division world champion.
Apart form holding the WBC and WBO bantamweight belts, he has won the WBA interim super flyweight and the IBF flyweight titles.
ABS-CBN will air the Donaire vs. Vazquez bout on Channel 2 this Sunday at 10:15 a.m.
