Diaz shrugs off 'nice guy' image
MANILA, Philippines – Welterweight contender Nick Diaz explained his aversion to attending press conference with his opponents in mixed martial arts (MMA) events.
“I don't act friends with anyone I am going to fight. That's crazy, I don't understand that,” said Diaz in Fight Hype.
Diaz, who is scheduled to meet "Natural Born Killer" Carlos Condit in UFC 143, believes the fight begins as soon as he signs over the dotted line.
“I think other people are crazy for acting all nice around people they are supposed to fight. I don't put on a show, what you see is what you get, and sorry some people can't handle that,” said Diaz.
Diaz was actually supposed to fight UFC welterweight champion Georges St.-Pierre.
But St.-Pierre was sidelined by a knee injury, prompting UFC officials to pit Diaz against Condit instead.
Diaz said he and Condit have a warrior mentality.
“We win by doing damage, not by trying to score points,” said Diaz. “He has a realistic fighting style like I do. It is real fighting, real martial arts.”
The Diaz-Condit fight will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
They will clash over the UFC interim welterweight title.
The winner of the bout will face St.-Pierre sometime in June.
BALLS Channel (Sky Cable Channel 34) will be airing UFC 143: CONDIT VS DIAZ via satellite on Sunday, February 5, 2012 starting at 11:30 am.
There will also be a replay on ABS-CBN’s Studio 23
