MANILA, Philippines – Filipino flyweight boxer Karlo Maquinto passed away Friday morning after slipping into a coma following his boxing match last week.

The 21-year-old Maquinto died at 10:15 a.m. at the Far Eastern University (FEU) Hospital in Fairview, Quezon City.

Doctors said Maquinto suffered from swelling of the brain following his bout against Mark Joseph Acosta last Saturday in Caloocan City.

“Ang naging reason sa kanyang comatose ay iyong pamamaga [ng utak] at nagkaroon din ng blood clot ang utak,” reported dzMM’s Robert Mano.

Acosta dropped Maquinto twice in the first round before Maquinto rallied to salvage a majority draw decision.

Maquinto suddenly collapsed on the mat after the fight.
