Tambasen, Labay to compete in US chess circuit
MANILA, Philippines-- Mary Grace Tambasen and Rainier Labay are vying for the 18th Annual Mid-America Open Chess Championship at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri.
The tournament will be staged on March 14-16.
This will be the first time for both Filipinos to compete in the annual tournament organized by the Continental Chess Association.
Tambasen, who is part of the coaching team of University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, had just finished third in the Under 1950 below category at the Gainsfield Grand Prix 2014 Open in Thailand.
Meanwhile, Labay, a former chess coach of La Salle Greenhills and La Salle Taft, won a local tournament in Batangas City last year.
Tambasen and Labay also will be seeing in action in the 8th Annual Philadelphia Open, which will be held from April 16-20 at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown in Philadelphia. -- Marlon Bernardino
