MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE 3) Barangay Ginebra tied its quarterfinal series against Talk ‘N Text after the latter walked out of the game due to a questionable call with a minute left in Game 4 of the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup Friday night at the Araneta Coliseum.
The victory was awarded to the Kings via forfeiture as the Tropang Texters decided not to continue playing due to what they perceived was bad officiating.
“I’ve been in the PBA for 17 years and I pride myself for not quitting. But I never come close to a situation like this,” said TNT head coach Chot Reyes. “I just felt it justified what we did.”
Ginebra was leading 27-20 when Texters forward Ranidel de Ocampo was whistled for a flagrant foul penalty 2 on Ronald Tubid for elbowing the Kings guard on the head with exactly 60 seconds left in the game.
The whole TNT ballclub, including the management led by owner Manny V. Pangilinan, did not like the call and ordered the team to leave the court as a sign of protest.
They were given 7 minutes grace period but they did not show up.
The series is now tied at 2-all and whether the Tropang Texters will show up on Sunday for the pivotal Game 5 remains to be seen.
“There’s no decision yet as of this moment,” said TNT board governor Ricky Vargas.
PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios will summon Texters team manager Virgil Villavicencio this afternoon to shed light on the walkout incident and De Ocampo for his flagrant foul.
Barrios said TNT will be fined at least P500,000 for walking out the game and additional penalties are expected to be handed out.
“The PBA constitution and by-laws states that P500,000 is the basic amount for a walkout. It’s up to the commissioner if there are further compensations that need to be imposed,” said Barrios.
Ginebra head coach Jong Uichico said the Texters are playing mind games.
“They think the refs will change their calls for Sunday’s game. They are trying to play mind games on the refs and the commissioner for Sunday’s game,” said Uichico.
“In spirit of sportsmanship, they should have returned. It’s the referee’s decision. Kaya nga may review to check the call,” said Kings governor Robert Non.
This was the second the time in league history that a team walked out of the game and did not finish the game.
Back in the 1990 First Conference, Ginebra, then known as Añejo and coached by the legendary Sonny Jaworski, also walked out of their Game 7 finals match against Shell at 2:52 mark of the second quarter.
Ginebra did not return and was fined P500,000 by then PBA commissioner Rudy Salud.
Red Bull almost walked out in Game 4 of its semifinal series against San Miguel Beer in 2006 Philippine Cup but the team returned although it did not escape a P507,000 fine.
Curiously, Uichico was the coach of the Beermen and Aldaba also officiated in that Red Bull-San Miguel game.
'Ginebra got 50 more free throws'
Reyes said that game statistics in their quarterfinal series with Ginebra clearly show that there was something wrong about the officiating.
| TNT Coach Chot Reyes |
“In the Talk ‘N Text-Ginebra series, Talk ‘N Text has taken 80 free throws… Ginebra has taken 126 free throws. They have taken almost 50 more free throws that we had in three games,” he said.
Reyes said that the numbers are questionable considering that most of Ginebra’s shots were taken beyond the arc as opposed to scoring inside the paint where they could fish more fouls.
“Ginebra has taken 25 more three-point shots in the three games… which means majority of the shots come from the three point line. In the first 12 minutes of this game (Game 4), they had already taken 14 free throws and they only took 6 attempts in the 2-point area. We attempted 20 times in the shaded lane and we were given 5 free throws… It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see the disparity,” he said.
Reyes said the second flagrant foul call against De Ocampo was the last straw. This, he said, prompted the team to walk out from the game.
Ginebra coach Jong Uichico merely shrugged off the walk out incident.
“We’ll take any win the way it is. If they give it to us by default we’ll take it. We’re here to win,” he said.
Painters level own series
In the second game, Eddie Laure avenged his Game 2 booboo with a huge three-pointer in the closing minutes that helped Rain or Shine survive Purefoods Tender Juicy, 103-100, to tie their own quarterfinal series to 2-all.
Laure fouled James Yap in the second game of the series with less than a second left that resulted a to 94-95 loss. For Friday's game, he buried a three-pointer to put the lead back to the Elasto Painters, 101-100.
Roger Yap had a crucial turnover in the next play that led to 2 free throws of Jeff Chan, 103-100, and Kerby Raymundo and Nino Canaleta missed their own three-point attempts as time expired.
Sol Mercado led Rain or Shine with 24 points, 4 rebounds and 8 assists while Gabe Norwood added 20.
Raymundo returned to the series after sitting out Game 3 and fired a game-high 34 points for the Giants.

BOOO!!! SA PBA
matagal na itong problemang ito sa PBA. I am a ginebra fan but i dont agree with the calls of some referee's specially kapag ginebra ang naglalaro. it seems like the league is a san miguel corporation league (because 3 teams own by smc; ginebra, san miguel, purefoods). i applaude what TNT has done! this should be a wake up call sa board of governors at management ng PBA specially sa kanilang commisioner. hindi pwedeng palagi nilang sinasabi na natural lang ito sa isang basketball games lalo na at pay off ang laro. they should do their job! ang mga team hindi yan nagtatapon ng pera kapag pumapasok sa PBA. they are working hard para maging karapat dapat na tawaging champion! the game should not be based on the popularity. it should be based on who is deserving! kung mahina ang pasok ng tao sa gates when ginebra is not playiing then the PBA should do their homework! Make it more exciting and make the people want it more to watch it live! Hindi yung nag su-suffer ang ibang team just for the sake of the popular team. I have watch the NBA on a regular season live and I must say na malayong malayo kumpara sa PBA. Maraming silang promo na ginagawa to attract the people to watch it live. nandyan yung may free hotdogs and softdrinks kapag alam nilang hindi popular teams ang maglalaro. So to conclude, I APPLAUDE TNT FOR THEIR BRAVERY AND COURAGE on the playoffs!!! Yung game 5 nila its a no brainer na to think TNT pa ang mananalo kahit gawin pa na patas ng referee ang officiating. Why??? because they have already destroy the morale of the team!!!!
PBA = SMC teams
First, I may not agree with the walk-out but I certainly believe
officiating was in Ginebra's favor. Ranidel did not elbow Tubid,
Ranidels arm was straight up defense which apparently clashed with
a driving Tubid. It does not merit a flagrant 2 call. Whereas, Tubid
should be called for a Technical foul for his second motion. But they did not. The refs took time to review the tape but still made that call. I can't believe they made that call and so is Quinito.
Second, the PBA should disband all 4 teams of SMC...San Miguel, Ginebra, Purefoods and Coca Cola. SMC should only have one team in the
league. Fans are merely fooled by this set-up. It's so unfair. SMC is PBA. They are the majority. Who else will stood up against them?
I am a San Miguel fan eversince, but I lost interest in the PBA
after SMC already has 4 teams.
TNT = Zero Class
TNT showed zero class walking out of that game. What a bunch of unprofessional sore losers. You'll never see an NBA team do that. So they have problems with officiating? They need to take it up with the commissioner and the league. File a formal complaint and do it in a civilized, professional and classy way. The PBA is a professional league, not a Barangay basketball tournament. Walking out of a game is not something professional players, professional coach, professional team playing in a professional league do.
Chot Reyes, what an unprofessional classless punk!
No-Hopers
I am just wondering whether TNT filed a formal complaint to the Commissioners Ofc. Its very clear on his interview that they already noticed the huge discrepency on their freethrows. If he is smart enough, he would have filed a complaint. Now if nothing has been done, then i might say yes, the walk out is justified. But if he did not file a complaint, I say Chot's decision is bull dust!!! Rubbish!!!
At the end of it all, ur not playing for ur team, nor the owners nor the PBA but for the PAYING FANS!!!
If the fans stop coming to the games, game over...
CHOT... STOP WHINGING...
AND PLEASE DONT TRY TO ASK THE PBA TO SUBMIT ALL GINEBRA PLAYERS TO OLYMPIC STYLE DRUG TESTING!!! am just preempting ur next move chot..hehehe
DAPAT TANGGALIN NA ANG TALK & TEXT SA PBA
Its very unusual ang ginawa ng TalkText sa pag walk-out with the approval of their management. Dapat bigyan sila ng mabigat na penalty o suspended yun kanilang franchise in a year sa ginawa nila. Napaka klaro ng laro at officiating at hindi biased ang mga referees.
Their coach is really stupid dapat mag coach na lang sa volleyball duon walang physical contact ng kalaban. Very inpractical yun ginawa nila di pa nga natatapos yun first quarter at quarterfinal lang yun di pa championship. Nakakahiya ginawa nila dapat humingi sila ng public apology lalo na yun management nila. This is awesome entertainment for the basketball fans but they treat it very personal and emotional. kung ganyan lang sila na pikon better na huwag ng maglaro sila o mag out na sila sa PBA.
Ang dami kasing fans ng
Ang dami kasing fans ng Ginebra kaya ginawa ng PBA na pananalunin ang Ginebra para lalo silang yumaman dahil malaki ang kita sa Venue.
Simple Explanation
Players play. Referees officiate. Fans watch the game.
Ive got to agree that the TnT
Ive got to agree that the TnT are overreacting over this flagrant foul, i mean, instead of just arguing about the calls why not make the necessary adjustments to cope up with the call... bad officiating always happens, just like in the NBA as i can still recall the Lakers Vs. Nuggets where all the calls seems to be in the favor of the nuggets but the Lakers stayed patient and even won that game despite giving up 23+ free throws to the nuggets... I'm an avid TnT fan but with this act, come on Chot, GROW UP, let the players play their game as they ought to be playing it, they are the stars of this team, not you!!!!
@ showtime tfcfansanantoniotexas
I am a fan, not a player, and definitely not a referee. I am asserting my right as a fan because I paid to watch a game. Players and teams are there to play the game for the fans. If a particular team have problems with officiating, there is a proper venue for their concerns. Walking out is not an option for a team to make. They must understand that they have a responsibility for their own fans and the fans of the other team. Players should play and not be a referee themselves. If walkout is the only option for contesting a particular game, then no game will be finished. Every game will just end up with the other team walking out of the game.
Points well taken
How in the world that the sports fans are not deprived of a good game, when the game looks like "LUTO" I might say!!! I as a fan of the game also overreacted with such nonsense calls. Would that be exciting to watch a game as it's being played out before your eyes, that the other team is not being treated fair and square,(By the way am not a fan of either team,) when a person sense he's been aggravated or his team not treated fairly how would you react??. Well let me ask you this Alexjm_ph?? if you sense that you're not treated fairly or being discriminated how will you react?? or you would just take one for the chin and run with it without reason?, the reason is pretty obvious the game is on it's early stage of the game, and your six sense smells a rat, theres no way shape or form you will win unless the opposing team will not make a basket for the whole duration of the game, so it's nonsense to pursue to win a game, like what i said before it's already decide of what the outcome of the game will be. Maybe if you have replaced the referee at the early stage of the game , maybe it would be fair and square. Or will see how good you are in officiating a game of basketball? Yes there are games when the opposing team is trailing by 20 or more points, and recover and wins the game, but not the game controlled by referees, and let the game decide itself.
