PBA gives Gilas 2 months prep time

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has agreed to postpone the league’s third conference to give Smart Gilas Pilipinas ample time to prepare for the 2013 FIBA Asia tournament in August.

PBA Commissioner Chito Salud said he has met with the league team owners regarding the Governors’ Cup, which was originally scheduled up to July 28.

Salud said the team owners concurred with the suggestion to move the Governors’ Cup to a later date to allow the national team, to be composed mostly of PBA players, to concentrate on their preparations for the FIBA Asia tourney.

“I had a very positive and productive talk with our team owners. Not only have they agreed to lend their players, they readily okayed moving the third conference until after the FIBA Asia tourney,” the PBA chief said in a statement.

The PBA also decided to extend the Commissioner’s Cup (second conference) to make up for the long break between conferences.

“To counter the negative effects on the member-teams of the resulting protracted break between conferences, the second conference will be extended by adopting the format of the recently concluded Philippine Cup,” said Salud.

The Commissioner’s Cup, which begins on February 8, will now be extended until the last week of May.

The Governors’ Cup, on the other hand, will be rescheduled to August after the FIBA Asia Championship.

This would give coach Chot Reyes and the Gilas Pilipinas team two months of preparation time for the Asian tournament that offers three slots for the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.

“As I have said, when good men reason together, the outcome is inevitably beneficial to everyone. In this case, our owners placed national interest above all considerations. I am so proud of the PBA,” said Salud.

The FIBA Asia tournament is scheduled to return to Manila 40 years after the Philippine team’s title win in 1973.
