NU stuns Ateneo in baseball; Tams win in chess

MANILA, Philippines – The National University (NU) Bulldogs stunned the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles in the UAAP Season 74 baseball tournament last weekend at the Rizal Memorial Baseball stadium.

The Bulldogs defeated the Blue Eagles, 8-5. Ateneo swept the first round of the tournament but has lost two games in the second round, dropping their record to 6-2.

Meanwhile, the De La Salle Green Archers trounced the University of the Philippines, 7-1.

With the Archers and the Bulldogs’ victories, they are now in a three-way tie with the Blue Eagles for first place with identical 6-2 records.

Defending champion University of Santo Tomas (UST) stayed on course to make the Final Four by edging Adamson University, 10-9. They are now tied with the Soaring Falcons in fourth place with a 3-5 mark.

In UAAP chess at the Far Eastern University (FEU)-Manila Mini Theater, the reigning five-time champion FEU Tamaraws drubbed the UST Tigers, 3-1, to keep the top spot at the start of the men’s second round.

In the women’s division, defending champion De La Salle widened its lead in the women’s division after subduing NU, 3-1.

The Tamaraws now have an eight-round total of 23.0 points to lead their group, while the Lady Archers collected 26 points.

There are still six rounds to play in the season.

FEU has a two-point lead over University of the Philippines (UP), which was forced to a 2-2 draw by De La Salle over the weekend. The Growling Tigers slipped to third place with 20.0 points.

The Lady Archers have an eight-point advantage over their closest pursuer, the UP Lady Maroons, who kept second with 18 points after clobbering the Lady Eagles, 3.5-0.5.

Ateneo is third with 16.5 points.
