Donaire wants public apology from Vazquez
MANILA, Philippines – World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire wants a public apology from Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. after the Puerto Rican boxer made "disrespectful" comments about the Philippines and Donaire's wife, Rachel.
Donaire defeated Vazquez via split decision in their match last Saturday in San Antonio, Texas (Sunday in Manila), in a bout that saw Donaire suffer an injured left hand.
The Filipino boxer said that Vazquez apologized to him after the bout, but added that he had no respect for the Puerto Rican boxer.
"Yeah, he told me he's sorry, that it was just part of business to hype our fight," Donaire said in an interview with The Philippine Star's Joaquin Henson.
"I'm not buying it. I don't think he's sincere. He showed disrespect to our country, our people and my wife" he added.
"He should make a public apology, that's what I want. Anyway, I beat him up."
Donaire and Vazquez nearly came to blows during their pre-fight weigh-in, and the boxers' wives were also involved in a Twitter war prior to the bout.
But Vazquez could not back up his trash talk. The Puerto Rican boxer was tentative to start the fight, covering up for most of the early rounds. He started to engage in the middle rounds but was knocked down in the ninth.
Donaire said he felt the pain from his injured left hand starting from the fifth round, but refused to let Vazquez see any weaknesses.
"I tricked him into thinking I was fine. I used my counter right a lot and switched to southpaw. I did a few things to keep him off-balance," he said.
"I didn't want to give an indication that I was hurt. I wanted him to think I was a threat from start to finish, that nothing was wrong."
Donaire said he will have to take some time off to heal his injured left hand, adding that it may be broken in two places.
"I think there's a fracture although it's only minor,"” he said.
Donaire wants to fight three more times in 2012, with the intention of unifying the belts in the super bantamweight division.
