Donaire injured his left hand in the early part of his bout against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. last Saturday in San Antonio (Sunday in Manila). Despite the pain, Donaire dominated en route to a split decision victory.
Donaire saw Dr. Steven Shin, the director of hand surgery in the Kerland Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles, who said the new champion did not sustain any broken bones.
"As far as we can see from his X-rays, there have been no fractures, which is very good news," Shin said.
"We think he does have some soft tissue injury, maybe injury to the muscles, perhaps some torn ligaments around the knuckles in his hand," the doctor added.
Shin said the bleeding Donaire sustained during the bout was most likely due to a vein cut.
Donaire is set to get an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to confirm the doctor’s diagnosis.
"Once we get the MRI, we'll have a better idea," Shin said.
"Good news, wala akong broken bones," Donaire said. "Mas mahirap kapag yung buto, if it's broken, mas matagal pa yung recovery time."
"Depende lang talaga sa healing process ng kamay ko. If it heals well, hopefully we'll be able to get the four fights this year," he added.
Donaire intends to unify all the belts in the super bantamweight division and plans to challenge Jorge Arce and Toshiaki Nishioka later in the year. – Report from Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News
