FEU tops CHED chess tournament
MANILA, Philippines – Far Eastern University (FEU) claimed the title as the top collegiate team on the 64 square boards as it dominated New Era University in the Commission on Higher Education (CHED)-National Capital Region (NCR) chess team tournament Wednesday.
The Lady Tamaraws swept New Era University, the reigning NAASCU champion, in 3 games to finish a total 12 points in 3 outings at the Manila Business College (MBC) in Alvarez St., Sta. Cruz, Manila.
“We have a great performance for the Lady Tamaraws that we able to get the champion in the last year’s Philippine National Games in Iloilo and as winning this CHED-NCR qualifying round. Hopefully we continue achieving chess titles in the future,” said FEU head coach, two-time Olympian Grandmaster (GM) Jayson Gonzales. FEU’s assistant coach is National Master (NM) Alex Milagrosa.
“Napakalaking karangalan na makalaban namin ang FEU at nakakuha kami ng experience saka talagang magaling sila," said soft-spoken New Era University chess coach Arnel Ellis.
2006 Doha Asian Games bet Woman National Master (WNM) Jedara Docena beat Rizza Ocampo after 27 moves of Vienna Opening on board 1 while Rulp Ylem Jose won via default on board 2.
Jenny Rose Palomo trounced Charmaine Miguel after 33 moves of Nimzo Indian defense on board 3 and Ronna Reigner Senora crushed Veronica Tarafica after 29 moves of King’s Pawn Opening on board 4.
With this feat, the Lady Tamaraws will represent the CHED-NCR in the national finals slated on February 23 at the Rizal Technological University (RTU) in Mandaluyong City. – by Marlon Bernardino
