Donaire may fight Rigondeaux in New York
MANILA, Philippines – The title unification clash between world super bantamweight champions Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire and unbeaten Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux may be held at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
Rigondeaux has reportedly signed the contract for the fight, scheduled for April 13, but Top Rank has yet to announce the venue for the HBO event.
A report from Keith Idec of Boxing Scene said Top Rank officials will meet next week "to determine the viability of bringing the... title fight to Radio City Music Hall in New York."
Also being considered as potential venues are the Theater at the Madison Square Garden, the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, as well as other sites in Texas.
Donaire fought at the Theater in October 2011, when he defeated Argentina’s Omar Narvaez in an uneventful bout. He also fought at the Home Depot Center twice last year, defeating Jeffrey Mathebula in July and Toshiaki Nishioka in October.
The fight against Rigondeaux will be Donaire’s first fight in 2013 after a stellar 2012 campaign that saw him win several Fighter of the Year awards.
