Arum: Marquez is no fool, will fight Manny again
MANILA – Boxing promoter Bob Arum believes Juan Manuel Marquez won't say no to a hefty payday that will come from a fifth clash with Manny Pacquiao.
Arum argued that it took years for Marquez to reach a high level of marketability.
The Top Rank CEO said it would be foolish for the 39-year-old Mexican to turn his back on a multi-million dollar fight purse.
“As long as he’s fighting, he’s not a fool. Of course he’s going to fight Manny rather than fight somebody for a lot less money,” Arum said in the Philippine Star.
The Mexican received a guaranteed $6 million from his fourth bout with Pacquiao, when he knocked out the Filipino superstar in six rounds.
Arum said Marquez is expected to get more than $6 million if he agrees to a fifth fight.
The Mexican earlier claimed he’s no longer interested in fighting Pacquiao after a decisive victory over the Filipino boxer last December.
He further claimed that fans may already be tired of watching them battle.
"The most important thing is that everything settled positively for me. Nor do I think that the fans have interest in seeing a rematch between us,” he was quoted as having said.
But Arum believes the statement is just Marquez’s ploy to dictate the negotiations.
“His idea of negotiations,” Arum said.
