Beristain says Marquez won't fight in April
MANILA, Philippines – Hall-of-Fame boxing trainer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain does not see his prized ward, Mexican champion Juan Manuel Marquez, returning to the boxing ring in April due to lack of time to prepare.
In an interview with Boxing Scene, Beristain said he has read media reports claiming Marquez may fight in April.
“I have not seen Juan, nor have I spoken to him. It has been said in the media that there are plans to fight in April, but I think that cannot happen,” said Beristain.
The respected trainer pointed out that there is not enough time for Marquez to prepare for a fight.
“If Juan came back to the gym (this) week, he wouldn’t be ready to fight until the second half of May, and not before then,” Beristain said.
“A lot of plans are made, but the reality is that he needs a certain amount of time to prepare. When he comes in to start his preparation, I will know (when he can return),” the trainer added.
“So far, I know nothing. All I know is what has been published, but nothing more than that.”
Marquez recently decided to continue his boxing career following a stunning knockout victory over Filipino rival Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao in December 2012.
A fifth fight against Pacquiao is in the works, with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum setting a meeting with Marquez this week.
