Penn to undergo eye surgery, uncertain about future
MANILA, Philippines – Former UFC champion BJ Penn will undergo surgery to have a cataract removed from his left eye.
Penn, who lost via a unanimous decision to Rory MacDonald in UFC on FOX, said he's not sure if he’s going to fight again because of his eye problem.
"I'm definitely hesitant to fight right now with the cataract in my eye," he said in Bloody Elbow.
"People ask me all the time if I'm going to fight again and I almost just want to change the subject because right now, I definitely don't want to fight with a cataract in my eye."
The UFC has set an appointment for him to see a doctor in Utah, the same eye specialist who operated on Antonio Margarito’s eye injury.
"I'm heading out to do see Dr. Crandall", said Penn. "He is the guy that did Margarito's eye and the UFC set this up for me."
Penn, the former UFC light weight and welterweight champion, has been contemplating retirement after losing four of his last six fights.
His losses included heavy beat downs from MacDonald and Nick Diaz.
