Helterbrand propels Ginebra past Petron
MANILA, Philippines – Jay-Jay Helterbrand delivered for Barangay Ginebra, draining the game-winning jumper at the buzzer to lead the Kings past Petron Blaze, 84-82, in a wild finish to open their PBA Commissioner's Cup campaign Sunday night at the Smart Arenate Coliseum.
Helterbrand, who finished with 11 points, eluded primary defender Alex Cabagnot before getting a shot off against Petron's 6-foot-10 import Nick Fazekas at the buzzer.
"The play was really for JayJay," Ginebra head coach Siot Tanquingcen told PBA.ph. "Pero wala sa coach 'yung ginawa n'ya. S’ya na ang gumawa noon."
Fazekas had 37 points and 18 rebounds in his debut, including the game-tying triple with 3.9 seconds left.
Returning Ginebra import Chris Alexander also had a massive impact, tallying 21 points and 24 rebounds.
"Alam n'ya kung ano ang kailangan namin sa kanya, at ibinigay naman niya. We have to give credit to the guy. He's out of shape when he came, but he worked to get into competitive form," Tanquingcen said of their import.
With Fazekas dominating, the Boosters rallied from a 22-point first half deficit and nearly pushed the game into overtime if not for Helterbrand's heroics.
"We truned the ball over too much and we hurt ourselves with those errors. Ang bilis nila kaming hinabol dahil sa transition plays nila," Tanquingcen said.
Chris Lutz led Petron's locals with 13 points, but no other Petron player scored in double figures.
