MANILA – The Asian V8 Championship Series, a four-month long set of racecar touring activities and promotions, will be held from April to June in an effort to bring the Philippines back to the arena of motoring competition.

Organized by the Philippine Formula Autosports Foundation, the Asian V8 Championship Series will be mounted to help push the Philippines to become a hub for late model NASCAR racing in Asia.

“We want to develop an Asian competitive testing and practice facility that will entice young and talented Asian drivers to participate in NASCAR world racing events, and the upcoming Asian V8 NASCAR Championship is the best way to start,” racing promoter Tom Pastor said in a statement.

For starters, the Philippine Formula Autosports Foundation has acquired eight late model NASCAR units, which will serve as competitive training vehicles at the Clark International Speedway at the Clark Special Economic Zone.

The area has been developed to meet world-class standards for racing and safety requirements to prepare Philippine and Asian entrants for American and European races.

The event also aims to help create another niche in the country’s overall tourism promotion, this time via motoring tourism.

“If you remember, our country hosted the very first Grand Prix in Asia,” Pastor said. “We became the very first Asian country in racing. However, up to this time, we have not developed any international racing program whatsoever.”

In pursuit of motoring tourism, the Philippines is set to be the main show hub of developing champions in the Asia Pacific rim, Pastor said.

“The prize and incentive for the Asian Open and pro race drivers is the great opportunity to race in Europe, in the Euro Racecar NASCAR Touring Series, and the K& N PRO NASCAR in the United States,” he said.

The Asian V8 Championship Series will be formally launched on February 27 at the Resorts World Manila Atrium.

Celebrity and media test runs for the Asian V8 Championship will be held on March 1 at the racetrack in the Batangas Racing Circuit in Rosario, Batangas.

In April, the initial detection program for Philippine and Asian race drivers will be held at the Clark International Speedway to select the best two drivers, one from Asia and the other from the Philippines, to participate in a race in Europe and in the United States.
