MANILA, Philippines – Football icon David Beckham said he couldn't help but admire Filipinos' cheerful spirit despite being badly hit by typhoon Yolanda last November.

The 38-year-old former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder visited Tacloban on Thursday to bring cheers to the Yolanda victims.

Beckham was on his second visit to the country in his role as a goodwill ambassador for the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF).

“I was humbled to visit Tacloban and see how people are still so full of spirit despite the devastation they have suffered. Close to 6 million children are affected and many have lost loved ones,” said Beckham in his official Facebook page.

“As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, seeing how children are being given a sense of normality amidst the rubble of their communities has been amazing. I want to show people around the world how their generous donations have had an enormous impact on children and their families and how thankful people here are for their kindness.”

Late last year, he and his celebrity wife, Victoria Beckham, donated their clothes to the British Red Cross to help raise funds for typhoon victims.
