Casimero only interim champion: IBF
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxer Johnriel Casimero only holds the interim version of the International Boxing Federation junior flyweight championship, instead of the full title.
Casimero won the interim title belt in a foul-filled match last Friday in Argentina against Luis Lazarte, in a bout that was marred by a post-fight brawl.
Mexican boxer Ulises “Archie” Solis is still the IBF junior flyweight champion, but IBF sanctioned an interim title bout after Solis got injured.
IBF chairman Lindsey Tucker told Boxing Scene’s Ronnie Nathanielsz that if Solis “can’t come back at the end of his medical exception, then Casimero will be declared the champion.”
Solis’ medical exception expires on October 31, 2012.
“However, if Solis is able to come back in the time frame allotted, he must fight Casimero,” Tucker said, adding that the winner of that fight will be the full champion.
“The interim title will disappear,” he said.
Casimero was ranked number 3 by the IBF prior to his bout against Lazarte, who is ranked number 4 in The RING’s junior flyweight ratings.
Following Casimero’s victory, he entered the RING’s ratings at number 10, while Lazarte, who said that he plans to retire after the loss, dropped out.
