Marquez eyes winner of Pacquiao-Bradley bout
MANILA, Philippines – Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez said he wants to fight the winner in the June 9 bout between Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley Jr.
Marquez, who was left without a partner in the Pacquiao sweepstakes, is now forced to look for a new opponent while he waits for the winner in the Pacquiao-Bradley tiff.
“I really do not know what will happen with the Bradley-Pacquiao fight. That's a tough fight for the two fighters ... but I would like the winner of that fight, yes,” he said in RingTV.
Marquez was among the candidate opponents for a Pacquiao fight in June. Other fighters in the list were Bradley, Lamont Peterson and Miguel Cotto.
His name was later mentioned in a possible match against Peterson. But Peterson agreed to a rematch against Amir Khan, leaving Marquez without an opponent.
“Bob Arum said that it was a tournament. Like if I would have fought with Peterson, the winner would have fought Pacquiao or Bradley. The winners were going to fight. Now, I have to find another opponent,” he said.
Marquez said he plans to stay active while he waits for the result of the Pacquiao-Bradley match.
“I have some options, yes. Maybe I'll fight in April in Mexico City. And then, maybe in July,” said the Mexican boxer.
He mentioned David Diaz, a former Pacquiao foe, as a possible opponent.
Marquez lost to Pacquiao during their third faceoff last November.
The Filipino champion managed to eke out a unanimous decision in that fight despite nearly being upset by Marquez.
