MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) Undefeated American boxing champion Floyd Mayweather believes Jeremy Lin, the starting point guard of the New York Knicks, is getting media attention and hype because of his race, not because of his basketball skills.

"Jeremy Lin is a good player but all the hype is because he's Asian," Mayweather said in a Tweet.

"Black players do what he does every night and don’t get the same praise," he added.

Lin, a Taiwanese-American, graduated from Harvard with a degree in Economics. He was undrafted in 2010 but played for the Golden State Warriors and eventually made his way to the Knicks this season, where he has become a phenomenon.

He is currently averaging 26.8 points and eight assists per game and is the first player in NBA history to score at least 20 points and dish out seven assists in his first four career starts.

Lin has led the Knicks to a five-game winning streak despite playing without All-Stars Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire. One of those wins was over the Los Angeles Lakers, a game that saw Lin score a career-high 38 points.

His player efficiency rating currently stands at 25.92, which is fifth in the NBA just behind LeBron James, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade and Kevin Durant, all of whom are All-Stars.

According to ESPN, this is not the first time that Mayweather has drawn flak for "racially insensitive remarks."

He famously went on a racist and homophobic rant against Filipino boxing icon Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao in 2010.

Mayweather drew criticism from his remarks about Lin, with ESPN's Michael Woods saying the undefeated boxer once again resorted to a "lame and obvious stunt" in order to stay in the news.

But Mayweather defended himself, saying he was only standing up for African-American athletes.

"Other countries get to support/cheer their athletes and everything is fine. As soon as I support Black American athletes, I get criticized... Wow what a country," he tweeted.

He also claimed that he is only speaking "on behalf of other NBA players."

"They are programmed to be politically correct and will be penalized if the speak up," Mayweather said.

Last week, Lin was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week. He and the Knicks will face the Toronto Raptors tomorrow.
