LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Three days before the weigh-in, Nonito Donaire still has about 4 or 5 pounds to lose to make the bantamweight limit of 118 pounds.

To make the weight, Donaire is limiting himself to 1 meal a day, usually soup, some carbohydrates, and minimal water.

Donaire is also sleeping more.

These are the sacrifices Donaire willingly goes through as he stays focused on the biggest challenge of his career – facing Fernando Montiel for the World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight belt on Feb. 19, Saturday (Feb. 20, Sunday in Manila).

"T'yaga pa rin at saka kaunting sacrifice na makuha 'yung timbang," he said.

Donaire showed ABS-CBN the shorts he used in his last fight where he beat up Vladimir Sidorenko en route to a knockout victory. The stain of blood from his opponent's face is still visible on the shorts.

Donaire said Montiel will suffer the same fate.

Donaire is excited to wear his new shorts and robe for the fight, which has the Philippine flag and his Filipino Flash logo.

Training on Tuesday was different for Donaire. He chose to do all his shadow work inside a sauna room.

Donaire went 10 rounds and was totally drenched in sweat.

'Sorry, I will beat Donaire'

Fernando Montiel

Montiel trained at the gym on Tuesday using a sauna suit.

The Mexican also needs to drop weight for Friday’s weigh in, but he is quite relaxed about it having fought in this weight class for many years.

Throughout the workout, Montiel was carefully watched by his training team, which includes his three brothers and father.

The Montiels grew up with boxing. Fernando, the youngest in the family, said he was born to fight.

"Filipinos are good people... but I have to say sorry because I will beat Nonito on fight night," Montiel said.

Aside from Donaire, Pinoy Mark Melligen is also psyched for his fight this Sunday as one of the undercards.

The well-defined welterweight goes up against Mexican Gabriel Martinez.

Melligen has been training in the Mayweather Gym in Las Vegas.

ABS-CBN Channel 2 will air the Donaire-Montiel fight on Feb. 20, Sunday at 10:15 a.m.
