MANILA – Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao filed a resolution seeking to honor Michael Christian Martinez who finished 19th at the men's figure skating event at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

In House Resolution No. 844, Pacquiao said Martinez made the nation proud by being the first figure skater from the Philippines and Southeast Asia to qualify for the Winter Olympics.

Martinez gained global attention when he competed in the figure skating event in Sochi.

Pacquiao also said Martinez set a good example to the youth with his hard work and perseverance.

"Despite living in a tropical country, he proved the world that nothing can stop him from chasing his dreams and that a stage as huge as the Winter Olympics is an arena reserved only for the persevered, thereby highlighting a character worthy of emulation," the boxing champ said.

"An achievement that garners international recognition and a character display that is worthy of emulation should be given due appreciation," Pacquiao added.

Martinez garnered a total score of 184.25 points, finishing 19th in the men's figure skating competition at the Winter Olympics.

After a respectable finish in Sochi, Russia, Martinez is now gunning for the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.
