Silva has nothing left to prove: training partner
MANILA, Philippines – Mixed martial arts (MMA) legend Anderson “The Spider” Silva has nothing left to prove in his legendary career but this will not stop him from returning to compete in the UFC, according to his longtime training partner.
Silva famously suffered a gruesome knee injury last December while fighting middleweight champion Chris Weidman for the title, and wound up losing for the second consecutive match.
Yet Ronaldo Souza, a longtime training partner of Silva, told MMA Fighting that the Brazilian superstar will fight again – and probably sooner than expected.
“I think he will return faster than many people think. A true champion always overcomes adversities, and he will,” said Souza.
“He’s the one who has to answer this question, but I believe he will return,” he added.
But Souza stressed that Silva, for a time the undisputed pound-for-pound king in the UFC, does not necessarily have to return. “He doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone,” he said.
Silva had surgery the night he suffered the injury, and has indicated that he wants to return to the UFC.
“I’m confident that… I will be back,” Silva said last January. “I think I still have a lot of things to do. I don’t plan to stop now. I’m getting stronger every day, and I will be back soon.”
Souza can only wish his training partner the best of luck.
“I’m praying for him to recover and to get well soon,” he said.
