Petron takes on skidding Meralco
MANILA – Petron Blaze goes for win No. 3 when they face Meralco in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday.
After losing their season opener against GlobalPort, the Boosters strung two straight victories over San Mig Coffee and Barangay Ginebra.
Petron coach Olsen Racela hopes to keep their momentum going when they face the Bolts.
“We’re getting there but it’s still a process. We’re still a long way to go. We’re still talking about consistency. We have to come out with a lot of intensity and energy every single game,” said Racela in PBA’s official website.
Meralco, on the other hand, wants to end a two-game skid.
The main concern of Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio is how to contain Petron’s import Renaldo Balkman.
The 6’6” Petron reinforcement averaged 31 points in their last two victories and can potentially do much damage against the Bolts.
“Transition defense must be perfect versus Petron. We must prevent open-court, highlight plays by Balkman. Defense must be lock-down,” said Gregorio.
He added that their two straight losses should serve as their springboard against the Boosters.
“We must learn from it and use it as a learning experience,” Gregorio said. “Little things like making layups, hitting open shots and burying free throws are small steps towards improvement.”
