MANILA, Philippines – Unbeaten Cuban boxer Guillermo Rigondeaux will surprise the boxing world when he battles Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire on April 13 as the former Olympian will win easily, claims one of Rigondeaux’s promoters.
Boris Arencibia, the chief executive of Caribe Promotions who co-promotes Rigondeaux along with Top Rank, told Boxing Scene that Rigondeaux “will win easier than most people think.”
“He will put Nonito to work and fight him. Nonito will feel the power of his punches,” Arencibia told Giancarlo Oquendo. “Rigondeaux is a stylist who breaks his opponents down.”
“And when Nonito starts to get frustrated, that’s the moment when Rigondeaux will push his attack,” he added.
The promoter made his statement in response to former featherweight champion Juan Manuel “JuanMa” Lopez’s prediction of a Donaire victory.
“I think we have to respect JuanMa’s opinion, but Rigondeaux will win easier than most people think,” Arencibia said.
Lopez has said he wants to fight the winner of the Donaire-Rigondeaux clash, potentially at a 128-pound catchweight, but Arencibia shot this down.
“Right now, Rigondeaux is focused on this fight, which is super important,” he said.
“After, we would then be willing to go against anyone at 126 (featherweight) – where we wouldn’t give away too much weight – and also against anyone at 118 (bantamweight),” Arencibia added.
“But I think right now, we can’t think of anything more than the fight with Nonito.”
At stake in the Donaire-Rigondeaux clash are the WBO, WBA and The RING super bantamweight championships.
