Clottey could be Pacquiao’s last fight: Roach
MANILA, Philippines – Boxing coach Freddie Roach said that if Floyd Mayweather Jr. keeps on playing “hard to get,” the former pound-for-pound king might actually miss the chance to fight 7-division world champ Manny Pacquiao.
Roach, who is currently training Pacquiao for his fight on March 13, said the Filipino boxer’s match with Ghana’s Joshua Clottey could be his last.
“If Mayweather doesn't come around after the fight and he doesn't sign to fight us, then this (Clottey fight) could be our last one,” the American trainer told EastSideBoxing’s On the Ropes.
Before signing up to fight Clottey, Pacquiao’s camp had negotiations with the Mayweather camp for a super fight. However, talks collapsed when the former pound-for-pound king demanded an Olympic style drug testing.
Pacquiao ended up setting a fight with Clottey to defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title, while Mayweather opted to fight “Sugar” Shane Mosley.
Before the power-punching Pinoy faced Miguel Cotto in November last year, Roach said he’d be happy to see Pacquiao retire while still on top of his game.
“If negotiations with Mayweather fail and Manny wins against Cotto, he’ll be having seven world titles. Nobody has done that before, so there’s nothing else to prove,” the trainer told sports analyst Dennis Principe.
Pacquiao will also be very busy after the Clottey fight as he will be pursuing his political career. He is running for congressman in Sarangani province in the May 10 polls. The campaign for local posts starts on March 26.
It is widely believed that Mayweather came out of retirement to fight Pacquiao for what many has said would be the richest boxing match in history.

Let me just add up, Clottey is not needing for another fight. It's obvious that his only fighting for money and not for pride, for himself, family, and country. Because if he was fighting for pride, he would have thrown punches instead of covering up in entire rounds. Pacquiao is fighting for pride, for entertainment, making the big difference.

I almost notice Pacquiao saying "We just want to entertain the people. Give the people what they want, its nothing personal". For Clottey however is nothing personal also, its all about Financials!... and making sure that he'll be enjoying the millions in beaches, hotels and casinos..
Fans dont want to know how much the fighter earns. Fans want to see a real fight. Fans want to be entertained. And that's why it'll be difficult for Clottey to find a next fight. Or fight in which people would love to see after he branded himself as a poor entertainer and fighter!...

Roach can say whatever he wants to say. What's the big deal about that? When he said Pacman would knockout Hatton in three rounds nobody listens. When he said Pacman would knockout Cotto in nine rounds nobody listens. When he said Clottey fight would last 12 rounds then changed his prediction for a knockout nobody listens. He is just like you and me. We make our opinions based on our perception of things. They may not come true as we expect them to be. But that's our opinion. Not all things Roach said will come true. He is not God. No big deal, right guys?

I kinda agree that Roach does talk more often than he should. He's cool and all but I have to agree he needs to know when to shut it sometimes. I do love when he trash talks since Manny doesn't.
He has made a lot of conflicting statements before. When Mosley offered to fight Manny at 140, he said no, then all of a sudden he's saying they'll fight him. He did talk about Cotto being Manny's last fight. He even talked about it during the Dela Hoya fight. Truth is he needs to leave the retirement talk to Manny. Manny's the one who makes that decision not him.
You're right about the drug testing mess. Roach, Arum, and Manny's so called team of advisers didn't exactly help (They should've just followed Manny's lead, NOT TALK until there's a deal). Their conflicting statements just made things worst. That's what happens when you negotiate through the media and public. They should've just kept everything behind close doors. If they had a deal, then they'll announce it. Arum admitted also that making the negotiations public was a mistake.
Roach has made more conflicting statements before but that's besides the point.

This guy's comment has nothing to do with whether Manny should retire or whether he disagrees that Manny has nothing to prove anymore or the actual content of Roach's statments. What he said is that Roach needs to tone it down with the talk especially when its conflicting with his previous statements. You obviously misunderstood what he's trying to say.

Pacman already attained a multi-boxing awards: Best Fighter of the Year, Best Knocked-Out of the Year, and Best Fighter of the Decade, and the awards's list goes on in on and on. period.

Roach Makes Sense
Pacman could retire after the Clottey fight.The fight with Mayweather would not push through because 50-50 sharing is not possible anymore and more demands from mayweather would be coming after the Mosley fight. Pacman has nothing to prove anymore.He has fought the great fighters of his era. With the election coming he could concentrate on politics and comeback to boxing after a year or two.Roach makes sense talking about it.
