Top Rank planning 'PH vs Mexico' show?
MANILA, Philippines –Top Rank, Inc. is reportedly considering a “Philippines vs Mexico” theme for a July 14 event at the Cowboys Stadium in Texas, featuring Juan Manuel Marquez and Nonito Donaire as headliners.
According to Rick Reeno of Boxing Scene, Top Rank wants to put on a show featuring Mexican lightweight champion Marquez against a Filipino challenger.
A potential foe for Marquez is lightweight prospect Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta, who is undefeated through his first 24 professional fights.
In an interview with RingTV, Gesta’s manager Vincent Parra hinted that his boxer’s next foe “will take everybody by surprise” and that the fighter is a bigger star than WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios.
“It’s not Rios. Bigger,” Parra said.
Meanwhile, WBO super bantamweight champion Donaire may also make an appearance on the card against veteran Victor Terrazas.
Donaire was supposed to make his first title defense against Jorge Arce, but that fight was eventually scrapped. The two boxers may still fight on September 2012.
Boxing Scene reports that Filipino flyweight champion Brian "The Hawaiian Punch" Viloria is also being considered for the card.
