MANILA, Philippines – Former welterweight contender Jon Fitch and 15 other fighters were recently released from the UFC.
Fitch, who challenged and lost to welterweight champion Georges St.-Pierre, only won one of his four fights in the UFC, and this was the reason he was cut from the promotion.
“Jon Fitch is ranked No. 9 right now... he was ranked No. 1, fought for the title, he was ranked No. 2, ranked No. 3, 6, 7 and now he's 9,” said UFC president Dana white in MMA Fighting.
In his last fight in UFC 156, he lost via a unanimous decision to submission expert Demian Maia.
“That's called the downside of your career, he's on the downside,” said White of Fitch's record.
Other fighters who were released from the promotion were: Wagner Prado, Mike Russow, Jacob Volkmann, Vladimir Matyushenko, Che Mills, Jay Hieron, Terry Etim, Paul Sass, Jorge Santiago, Mike Stumpf, Simeon Thoresen, C.J. Keith, Motonobu Tezuka, Josh Grispi and Ulysses Gomez.
Meanwhile, White apologized to some of the fighters who weren’t immediately informed of their release.
“There were guys who didn't know that they were cut. I take full responsibility for it and I apologize.”
