MANILA, Philippines – Former world champion Marvin Sonsona landed a perfectly timed uppercut to knock out Akifumi Shimoda of Japan in the third round of their WBO international featherweight title contest at the Cotai Arena in Macau on Saturday.

Sonsona, a former super flyweight king, tagged Shimoda with a left uppercut, putting an end to the 12-rounder, 1:17 minutes in the third round.

"I was observing what Shimoda was capable of in the first two rounds before I was able to catch him in round three," the 23-year-old said in Boxing Scene.

"By the third round, I was setting up my punches and put myself in position to land the uppercut. Shimoda opened up just enough to allow me to land the punch to end the fight," said Sonsona, who won the WBO flyweight belt from Jose “Carita” Lopez at the age of 19.

He, however, was forced to vacate the belt after failing to make weight for his first title defense. Sonsona also lost to Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. during his debut in the featherweight class. He has compiled four straight wins since then.

The Shimoda fight took place at the undercard of the Zou Shiming- Yokthong Kokiegym flyweight bout.

Sonsona, who improved to 18 wins against 1 defeat, is expected to return to Macau on the undercard of the Nonito Donaire-Simpiwe Vetyeka IBF title bout on May 10.
