MANILA, Philippines – Marvin Sonsona’s knockout victory over former world champion Akifumi Shimoda was so impressive that it caught the attention of boxing promoter Bob Arum.

In an interview with Boxing Scene’s Ronnie Nathanieslz, Arum said Sonsona’s uppercut, which knocked the lights out of Shimoda, was one of the best punches he’s seen “in 50 years of boxing.”

Sonsona, the former WBO super flyweight champion, studied the Japanese in the first two rounds before unloading the left uppercut that stopped the fight. The hit was so powerful that Shimoda was rendered unconscious for several minutes.

“What a left uppercut. It traveled such a short distance with such power. It was an incredible punch,” Arum raved.

Arum admitted that he wasn’t initially interested with Sonsona after seeing the Filipino still “feeling it out” with Shimoda.

“In the first two rounds he looked like nothing. It seemed like a mismatch,” he said.

After the Filipino's win, Arum said he is open to working with Sonsona’s handlers Sammy Gello-ani and Sampson Lewkowicz.

“They both seem like nice fellas so we are going to integrate him (Sonsona) into future cards both in Asia and the United States,” Arum said.
