Chan's confidence boosted by Game 5 explosion
MANILA – Rain or Shine gunner Jeff Chan is positive the Elasto Painters can force a do-or-die Game 7 against the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers in the PBA Philippine Cup Finals, especially after he put together a bounce-back performance in Game 5.
Chan caught fire in the second half of Game 5, scoring 23 of his 24 points, and powering Rain or Shine to an 81-74 victory that allowed them to force a Game 6 on Wednesday.
“Attack mode lang ako, kasi ayokong i-give up ‘yung game,” Chan told the league website. “Gusto ko pang maglaro.”
Chan’s performance – which included a difficult turnaround jumper in crunch time – was a big boost to his confidence after a couple of subpar games.
“Last two games, mababa ‘yung scoring ko, kaya kailangan talagang mag-contribute sa team,” he said. “Si Paul (Lee), medyo nabantayan siya, kaya kailangan ko talagang gumawa.”
Chan wound up making seven of his 16 attempts from the field to finish with a game-high 24 points. Lee had eight points in the contest.
“Hopefully next game, sabay na kaming pumutok para hindi ganong kahirap ‘yung laro para sa amin, at para mas maganda ‘yung kalabasan ng game,” Chan said.
“Na-break namin ‘yung three-game winning streak nila,” he added. “Tingin ko, kaya din naman naming manalo ng tatlo, kaya positive lang kami.”
“Wag kami bibitaw at dumikit lang kami sa laban, we’re good. Ang goal namin is umabot pa ng Game 7. Kaya naming ipanalo ‘yun.”
Rain or Shine took the series opener, but San Mig claimed the next three games to put the Elasto Painters on the brink.
Game 6 of the Finals is scheduled for Wednesday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.
