Hard work begins for Pacquiao

MANILA, Philippines - Unless Freddie Roach holds him back, Manny Pacquiao will begin sparring today for his April 12 rematch with Timothy Bradley in Las Vegas.

Roach arrived in General Santos City yesterday from Macau. After a brief rest, he went to work, putting on his gear and working the mitts with Pacquiao.

As usual, there seemed to be no stopping Pacquiao, and the mitts session lasted longer than Roach may have planned. The dynamic duo did more than a dozen rounds.

The sparring sessions are scheduled to start today. Already waiting on the wings is undefeated Lydell Rhodes (19-0 with nine knockouts) who came in more than a week ago.

A couple more sparring partners have been informed of the task ahead, and they include former world champions Steve Forbes and Kendall Halt.

Rhodes arrived in General Santos City ahead of schedule and has been working out with Pacquiao the past few days. He’s here to imitate Bradley, with his looks and with his moves.

“Sparring may begin tomorrow,” said Pacquiao’s adviser, Mike Koncz, who flew in with Roach from Macau.

The Canadian adviser told The STAR yesterday that Pacquiao is doing well in training and Roach was impressed with what he saw at the gym.

“Everything is good. Manny has been working out every day,” added Koncz, who could not say how long Pacquiao would train in General Santos City before heading to Los Angeles.

“We don’t know yet,” he said amid reports that Pacquiao will fly to LA on the first week of March.

The hard work has just begun.
