Gin Kings gun for first win vs Barako
MANILA, Philippines – The Barangay Ginebra Kings hope to finally nail their first win of the PBA Commissioner's Cup when they take on the Barako Bull Energy Cola Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Gin Kings, still winless after four games this conference, held a two-hour team meeting Monday to discuss the issues plaguing their squad.
"Lahat ng players naniniwala we should stay positive," Ginebra coach Alfrancis Chua told PBA.ph.
"Kumpiyansa lang. Marami naman kaming shots. Almost 80% nga lang, ayaw pumasok. Kailangan tiwala sa sarili," he added.
The Gin Kings hope that new import Vernon Macklin, who replaced the ineffective Herbert Hill, will be able to tow the team to victory after scoring only 16 points in their 69-84 loss to Alaska last weekend.
But the perennial crowd favorites face a tough challenge against the Energy Cola, who currently tote a 3-1 record and can gain solo second place with a win tonight.
"The guys believe in the system we're playing. They're working hard. They're coming early in practice," Barako Bull consultant Rajko Toroman said.
"Step by step, they're picking up what we want them to play,"” he added.
Barako Bull is coming off a stirring 91-86 come-from-behind victory against the Air21 Express last week, with guard Josh Urbiztondo coming up big in crunch time as the Energy Cola rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final quarter.
