Rios blasts 'stupid, ignorant' Broner
MANILA, Philippines – Undefeated American boxer Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios lashed out at Adrien “The Problem” Broner after the lightweight champion claimed to not know who he was.
Broner competes at lightweight but is considering a move up to the light-welterweight division, where Rios currently holds a championship.
But when asked about a potential clash against Rios, Broner claimed to be unaware of who “Bam Bam” was, according to Boxing Scene.
This did not sit well with Rios, who criticized Broner in an expletive-filled interview with Luis Sandoval.
“He asks, ‘Brandon who?’ If he don’t know who the (expletive) I am, then I think he’s in the wrong sport because everybody knows who I am. So it’s kind of stupid for this guy to say that (expletive),” Rios said.
“He looked retarded for saying that. Ignorance, he’s a (expletive) ignorant dude,” he added.
Rios also belittled Broner’s record, pointing out that even though “The Problem” was undefeated, he has yet to face a true top contender.
“What does the 0 (zero) matter if you (expletive) haven’t challenged the best? I want the best. I don’t care if I have an 0 or not, I want the best,” Rios said.
“This (expletive) acts like he’s on top of the world. He hasn’t really done (expletive). He’s fighting little (expletive), midget (expletive). He fights little (expletive) that hit him without power,” he added.
Broner recently extended his unbeaten streak to 26 fights with a stoppage victory over Britain’s Gavin Rees, but Rios said he was not impressed with the performance.
“Imagine if I hit him with those type of shots Rees hit him with,” Rios said. “I think he would’ve been done. Me and Lucas Matthysse or even Danny Garcia would (expletive) hurt this guy. He’s stupid.”
Given Broner’s performance against Rees, Rios is unconvinced that he has what it takes to follow the footsteps of American superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr., whom Broner idolizes and considers an older brother.
“He ain’t no Mayweather,” Rios said of Broner. “With a little midget with no power hit him, and if that was Mayweather in that situation, that would never happen. So this (expletive) ain’t no Mayweather.”
Rios is set to face Mike Alvarado in a rematch of their 2012 Fight of the Year contender on March 30 in Las Vegas.
