Purefoods takes series lead, moves closer to PBA crown
MANILA, Philippines - Purefoods Tender Juicy moved closer for a record-tying 5th All-Filipino crown after pulling off a heart-pounding 79-78 escape in Game 3 for a 3-0 lead in the best-of-7 championship series of the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup Sunday night at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Giants, like in Game 2, trailed most of the way Sunday night and stared at a 13-point deficit midway in the third. Their defense, however, brought them back in the game to carve out another come-from-behind win over the top seed Aces.
James Yap struggled all night but still led Purefoods with 14 points while Peter June Simon added 12 off the bench as the Giants need one more win to tie Crispa with the most number of All-Filipino crowns in league history.
"Once again, our defense held up," said head coach Ryan Gregorio, who drew solid contribution from almost everybody particularly from the second unit led by Simon and KG Canaleta.
"But as I've said before, there's no reason to be happy. It takes four wins to wrap up the series," he added.
Canaleta opened the final canto with a one-hand baseline slam and hit a three-pointer to push the Giants within 3, 66-69, after trailing 42-55 at 6:46 mark of the third quarter.
John Ferriols and Tony dela Cruz hit a jumper each to give Alaska a 73-66 cushion but Purefoods scored the next 7 points capped by Yap's jumper to tie the game at 73-all.
Willie Miller's beat the buzzer with a baseline jumper for a 77-74 spread for the Aces but Canaleta, who was inserted back in the game, buried a huge 3-pointer to knot the score again at 77-all with 3:05 remaining.
"That was the biggest shot of the game," said Gregorio of the triple by Canaleta, who almost turned into a goat after taking a hurried shot with Purefoods holding a 79-78 lead with 31.3 seconds left.
But the Aces did not get a clean look at the basket in their final 2 possessions as Joe Devance took a forced shot and Miller's drive was well contested by a phalanx of Giants defenders as the final buzzer sounded.
"I respect the game of Miller. It's always in the end you give the ball to your best player. But I told the players, as long as the shot is contested, they won't hear anything from me," said Gregorio.
Alaska now faces a situation that no team in league history has been able to do – erase a 3-0 lead in a best-of-7 series and win it.
"I'll tip my cap and sing Purefoods praises when this series is over," said Aces coach Tim Cone. "But it's not over yet."
Miller finished with 20 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists but had 6 of the team's 20 turnovers.
Devance added 16 points and 10 rebounds for Alaska while Sonny Thoss and Dela Cruz contributed 12 and 10 markers respectively.
For the third straight game, Thoss was slowed down by early foul trouble, getting his third at the 4:06 mark of the second quarter. He fouled out at 3:43 mark of the fourth period.

REFEREE KA BA???
Ang Ganda nga ng laban, Fair at Square ang officiating.. Hindi ka siguro marunong maglaro o malamang natalo ka na naman sa pustahan..
I haven't watched PBA for the
I haven't watched PBA for the past 4 years until the Talk 'n Text walk-out. And I was surprised to see the rapidly deteriorating quality of officiating. I noticed the ratio of offensive fouls called as against blocking fouls were alarmingly high. Player with ball possession should be given the benefit of the doubt during a contact so as to preserve the beauty of the game. Incidental contacts should be allowed simply because the fans are there primarily to see well-executed offensive plays rather than a defensive stop.
There was a game were 3 of the 4 fouls of a particular player were all offensive fouls, and from then on, this player hesitated to attack during an offensive play and was even tentative
to ask for the ball. And one more thing, refs should not decide game for themselves and let the player do it. Remember the foul on Kerby Raymundo in the dying second of Game 3? Btw, I'm a Purefoods fan but was not happy with their win in that game. And I don't think refs are biased in favor of any Cojuangco teams.

tanggapin nalang ang pagkatalo...go PUREFOODS...4-0
@dblogger
hey can you point out which one is bad officiating in game 2, if your talking about the foul to tenorio it is good call supposed to be tenorio should be called offensive foul cause he is the one who initiated the contact raffy reaves is too far from him yeah of course you cannot see in the court side cam but is your going to look on another angle it was tenorio who initiated it. and for the foul for kerby it was a foul there is a contact from alaska player. try to check the game dude.
try to check all the offensive foul of purefoods all of them are not accurate hugnatan is moving when mairhofer got offensive foul and also alaska player is moving when james yap got his offensive foul.
i didn't saw the game 3 so i can't say anything about it.
and by the way if it is a San Miguel League don't you think that it is better to see the team of San Miguel Beermen on the finals not Purefoods. if your going to say that Purefoods is trying to tie with crispa about the 5th title for all pinoy cup you better think!! cause san miguel beermen is also eyeing for that title 5th times.
Bulok ang officiating
I'm a PBA fan (though I like Alaska, PF and SMB a bit more) and I feel sad and betrayed when I see inconsistent calls. Lalo na when the game is on the line!
Bakit yung kay De Ocampo (TnT-Ginebra) flagrant 2, yung last play nung game 2 may foul and yung last play ng game 3 wala?
Ayoko namang isipin na binibili ng SMC teams yung laro pero bakit na lang lagi malabo at inconsistent yung mga tawag lalo na 'pag involved 'yung mga team nila?
ACES
Miracles do come true. Don't loose faith aces. 4 lang yan. Show them good defense.
BIAS OFFICIATING
BAKA NASA PAYROLL NG SAN MIGUEL CORP. YUNG MGA REF! LoL
MINSAN PA NGA MAKIKITA MO NA NAKATAAS NA YUNG BRASO NI MR. REF NA NAG A-"ASSUME" NA ME FOUL NA TATAWAGAN VS. ACES...HeHeHe

PS:
in case "walisin" nila yung series...eh baka binayaran na rin ng SMC yung sales na makukuha sa game 5,6,7 bwahahahaha para naman di lugi ang PBA..bwahahahaha
SAN MIGUEL LEAGUE
How come every time refs made a bad call in favor of alaska they quickly change it just because purefoods were protesting. And how could the game officials just ignore the bad call in the end game of game 2? why is it like this in the PBA. these just goes to show that someone is behind it.
im not a good player myself but i do know the rules. rules are rules. and clearly theyre not enforcing it properly. ive been a fan of alaska for more than a decade. everytime they lost a game i can quickly accept it if its clear to me that they've really lost the game. but game 2 is hard to digest. i admire the aces for being classy or whatever for not protesting the bad call anymore. but did they ever think of they're fans? but oh well, im sure nothings gonna happen din nman if they did.
now, game 3 for me is even worst. i thought willy was fouled in the last seconds of the game. he drove past someone then jumped for a shot. player behind him bumped willy. i thought it was a foul. it clearly changed the momentum of willy. that was just my opinion.
thats what i saw. maybe im not right but for it was really clear it was a foul. baka napapikit na mga referee sa excitement at tapos na trabaho nila para tulungan manalo yun opposing team.
anyway, pba should not call it philippine cup no more. its should be "SML" cup! San miguel league or "DCL" or danding cojuanco cup.
