Miami Heat to retire Mourning's number
MIAMI - Alonzo Mourning's number 33 jersey will be retired by the Miami Heat at a ceremony March 30, the first time the National Basketball Association club has so honored a player.
The Heat announced Saturday that All-Star center Mourning, who helped Miami to an NBA title in 2006, would be honored at half-time of a game against rival Orlando.
Mourning spent 10 1/2 of his 15 NBA seasons with the Heat, officially retiring in January. The 38-year-old standout is the Heat's all-time leader with 9,459 points, 4,807 rebounds and 593 games played.
The two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease in 2000 after a season in which he averaged 22.5 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.9 blocked shots a game.
Mourning missed the first five months of the following season but played a full campaign in 2001-2002, then missed the entire 2002-2003 season before undergoing a kidney transplant in late 2003.
A few months after that, he returned to the NBA with New Jersey and would later play for Toronto before returning to Miami.
The number two overall pick in the 1992 NBA Draft by the then-Charlotte Hornets, Mourning averaged 17.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots a game for his career.
