Azkals hold down Malaysia to scoreless draw
MANILA, Philippines – Despite missing some of their superstars, the Philippine Azkals managed to hold down Malaysia to a scoreless draw during their friendly game at the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.
The Azkals, composed of their new players and some of their mainstays, has put up a good fight against a full-strength Malaysian squad at the Selayang stadium.
It was the Philippine squad’s first game under their new coach Thomas Dooley, who took over the post of former Azkals mentor Michael Weiss.
Phil Younghusband nearly scored a goal for the Azkals when he got near the box in the early minutes. In the 64th minute, he again got a chance but failed to convert a goal.
It was the third straight draw between the two squads. Azkals drew Malaysia, 1-1 in Manila and 0-0 in Shah Alam during their two previous meetings.
The Azkals will battle Azerbaijan on Wednesday in another friendly game.
The games are part of the Philippines’ preparations for the AFC Challenge Cup, which will take place in Maldives from May 19 to 30.
The Challenge Cup winner will get a slot in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.
