Giants try to finish Aces on Wednesday
MANILA, Philippines – Purefoods will go for the clincher on Wednesday night as they try to sweep Alaska in Game 4 of their best-of-7 2009-10 KFC PBA Philippine Cup finals series at the Araneta Coliseum.
Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio said that although they have won 3 straight games over the Aces, they remain cautious playing against the Alaska squad.
“It takes 4 wins to wrap up the series, so until we nail that fourth win there’s no reason for me or my players to celebrate,” Gregorio said in a report posted on PBA.ph.
Gregorio said defense will again be their key against the Aces, whom they expect to immediately start scoring when game time begins at 7 p.m.
“We will again set the tone on defense,” he said. “We expect a determined Alaska to be firing on all cylinders so we have to equal if not surpass the effort that they will render in Game 4.”
'Not yet over'
For his part, Alaska coach Tim Cone remains hopeful that they can still turn the tables on the Giants.
“The series is not over yet,” he said. “Our attitude is, they beat us three straight so there’s no reason we can’t beat them three straight.”
According to PBA.ph, only 2 teams have completed a 4-game sweep in a PBA championship series.
The RP Team mentored by Ron Jacobs and carrying the colors of Northern Consolidated Cement first accomplished the feat as guest squad by beating Manila Beer in the 1985 Reinforced Conference Finals.
The Swift Mighty Meaties, powered by import Tony Harris and coached by Yeng Guiao, duplicated the feat against Seven-Up in the Finals of the 1992 Third Conference.
