Ravenes finds Boone a 'perfect fit' for Beermen
MANILA, Philippines – New San Miguel Beermen head coach Biboy Ravanes said import Josh Boone is the perfect fit for his team as they begin their campaign in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Boone, the former starting center for the New Jersey Nets, was signed as the reinforcement of the Beermen, a choice made with San Miguel’s core players in mind.
“Feeling namin siya ‘yung babagay kay Arwind (Santos) at June Mar (Fajardo),” Ravanes told the league website. “They can complement each other’s game.”
The 6-foot-10 Boone played for four seasons with the Nets and is expected to form a tremendous frontline along with Santos and Fajardo.
Ravanes said that Boone, with his NBA pedigree, was a perfect fit for San Miguel Beer and was not out to be a star.
“Hindi siya talaga ‘yung tipong go-to-guy,” he explained. “He just wants to work hard. Parang role player who can get all those rebounds, and play defense.”
“Hindi namin talaga kailangan ng shooter kasi madami na kami, so parang perfect fit siya sa amin,” he added.
Boone reinforces a San Miguel squad that went through both a personnel and coaching overhaul after another disappointing finish in the 2014 PBA Philippine Cup.
After leading for most of the way in the elimination round, San Miguel – then playing as Petron Blaze – sputtered towards the finish line and lost to Rain or Shine in five games in the semi-finals.
They have since changed coaches – from Gee Abanilla to Ravanes – and traded chief playmaker Alex Cabagnot for Sol Mercado and Rico Maierhofer.
“Kung ma-remember namin ‘yung games namin, parang hirap kami maka-finish. Sa end game, nawawala. The additions of Sol and Rico, malaking factor ‘yun,” said Ravanes.
“Important sa amin na when the going gets tough, may magle-lead sa team inside the court, especially for Sol. ‘Yung ang factor kaya kinuha nain siya,” he added.
“Iba siya kay Alex. Magaling siya, pero we felt mas good fit sa amin ngayon si Sol.”
