JuanMa’s forward style is good for me says Peñalosa
World bantamweight champion and now super bantamweight challenger Gerry Peñalosa said Juan Manuel “JuanMa” Marquez’s forward fighting style will suit him just fine.
“Alam nating si Lopez palaban, hindi tumatakbo. 'Yong style na 'yan, paborito ko ‘yan,” Peñalosa recently said in SportsNews.ph’s video interview on his upcoming fight with the reigning WBO super bantamweight champion.
He said that his counterpunching techniques will be his equalizer against the younger Lopez, who remains undefeated in 24 fights.
“So, unahan na lang,” said Peñalosa.
The match up is slated to take place on April 25 in JuanMa’s turf, Puerto Rico.
Peñalosa said winning a third title in separate divisions is his ultimate dream and Lopez could just be his ticket to get there.
“Sana tayo ang makauna[ng makatama] para maging bagong weight division champion tayo,” he said.
The veteran Filipino boxer has already won the WBC super flyweight and the WBO bantamweight titles.
Peñalosa, who has a professional record of 54 wins, 6 losses and two draws, outscored Meraz in the "Battle of the Best Bantamweights" card last month.
Judges saw it 100-89, 100-89, and 99-90 all in favor of Peñalosa.
Lopez, on the other hand, totes a record of 24 wins and zero loss. He recently won via technical knock out over Sergio Manuel Madina on December 6, 2008.
The Peñalosa-Lopez match will take place at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
