Pacquiao cautioned against 'overtraining'

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao has been firing all cylinders in training while preparing for his rematch against undefeated American Timothy Bradley.

On Tuesday, a well-conditioned Pacquiao went through 15 rounds of punch mitts aside from doing bag work.

But the Filipino’s assistant trainer, Buboy Fernandez, said they are also being careful not to let their prized fighter peak early before his April 12 match.

“Tinatantya natin talaga na hindi tayo masusunog,” Fernandez said in a report by ABS-CBN Gensan’s Francis Canlas, while commenting on the boxer’s eagerness in training.

“Tulad kanina sa skipping rope, ang ibinigay ko lang sa kanya mga eight minutes lang, kaso ayaw talaga huminto so inagaw ko na lang ang skipping rope niya para mapahinto natin. Kasi mahirap masunog,” he added.
The eight-division former world champion still has six weeks of training ahead of the scheduled 12-round contest and will still have to practice the strategies they will need to beat a slick fighting Bradley.

Fernandez said Freddie Roach wants Pacquiao to be in top condition before he climbs the ring as this will allow the Filipino to chase Bradley wherever he goes.

“’Yung plan kahit anong mangyari, more aggressiveness and more pressure para hindi tumakbo [si Bradley]. Para walang masabi ‘yung mga judges,” Fernandez said, alluding to Pacquiao’s controversial decision loss to Bradley in 2012.

“[This time] malalaman natin talaga kung sino ang nanalo. Papasok at papasok tayo kahit anong mangyari.”
