'Donaire on a different level than Arce, Rigondeaux'

MANILA, Philippines – Undefeated featherweight prospect Miguel Angel “Mikey” Garcia believes his good friend, Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, is a class above challengers Jorce Arce and Guillermo Rigondeaux.

Garcia’s brother, Robert, is Donaire’s trainer and both boxers are managed by Cameron Dunkin.

In an interview with Examiner, Garcia commended Donaire for winning the WBO super bantamweight championship after defeating Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. via split decision.

“I think Vazquez Jr., he’s a good fighter, he was already a world champion. But I think Donaire, his abilities as a fighter are above what Wilfredo Vazquez had to offer,” he said.

“Donaire was in control most of the fight,” Garcia added, but noted that “The Filipino Flash” had to pull back a bit because of his hand injury.

Donaire was supposed to fight Mexico’s Arce next, though that fight has been postponed. He was also challenged by Rigondeaux, an undefeated boxer from Cuba.

If Donaire and Arce end up fighting later this year, Garcia does not expect his friend to encounter much trouble.

“I don’t think Arce will be able to sustain the abilities and the skills and the power that Donaire carries,” he said. “Donaire is right now at a much higher level that I think Arce is at the moment.”

Garcia added that Arce was a strong and powerful fighter when he was campaigning at lower weight classes a few years ago, but now “he’s maybe losing it a little bit.”

“I think Donaire will likely stop him,” he said.

As for Rigondeaux, Garcia believes the Cuban star will be a good match-up for Donaire, but still expects the Filipino boxer to win.

“I don’t think he’s a threat to Donaire. He’s got a lot of experience as an amateur, not as a professional,” Garcia said of Rigondeaux, who won gold medals in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games.

“He’s also a world champion, but I think Donaire has a lot more experience as a professional than Rigondeaux does. That will be a big factor,” he added.

“Rigondeaux’s fast, and he’s a smart fighter, but I think Donaire is above their level of fighters.”

Garcia is set to fight Filipino boxer Bernabe Concepcion on March 10 for the WBO NABO featherweight title and the NABF featherweight title.
