Paragua held to back-to-back draws in Vietnam chess

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino Grand Master (GM) Mark Paragua settled for two straight draws in the ongoing 2nd HD Bank Cup International Open Chess Tournament at the HD Bank Head Office in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

His latest draw came against GM Le Quang Liem of Vietnam in the eighth round on Wednesday. Paragua earlier drew with GM Cao Sang of Vietnam in the seventh round late Tuesday.

Paragua improved his output to 5.5 points on four wins, one loss and three draws in eight rounds, the same output of countryman International Master (IM) Rolando Nolte.

Nolte subdued IM Diu Viacheslav of Russia in the seventh round and then drew with IM Nguyen Van Huy of Vietnam in the eighth round.

Le, who also defeated Filipino GM John Paul Gomez in the seventh round, now has 6.5 points for solo second place.

He is a full point behind solo leader GM Ni Hua of China, who totes 7.5 points. Ni beat IM Duon The Anh of Vietnam and IM Gao Rui of China in the seventh and eighth rounds, respectively.

GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam smashed comaptriot Tran Quoc Dung and GM Li Shilong of China to raise his total to six points, good for solo thirrd place.

The nine-round competition offers a total pot prize of $30,000 with the champion getting the lion’s share with $10,000.

Gomez split the point with IM Nguyen Duc Hoa of Vietnam to join GM Oliver Barbosa, IM Emmanuel Senador and Fide Master Paulo Bersamina for 15th to 27th places.

At 28th to 42nd places with 4.5 points were GM Eugene Torre, IM Oliver Dimakiling and National Master Edgar Reggie Olay. IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia scored four points for 43rd to 55th place while NM Rhobel Legaspi notched 3.5 points for 56th to 69th place. – By Marlon Bernardino.
