Lucrative fight eyed between JuanMa, Donaire
MANILA, Philippines – Top Rank promotions is grooming Puerto Rican champ Juan Manuel Lopez for a May fight against unbeaten WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia.
But Lopez’s co-promoter, Ivan Rivera, has big plans for the former two-division world champion as he wants to set Lopez up for a lucrative fight with “The Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire Jr., who plans to climb the featherweight ranks soon.
"We'd like Donaire at 126 [pounds], but we have to see if [Lopez] can still get down there and how good the deal is. He has said he will fight at 130 but if he gets a good deal on 126, everyone would sacrifice and put in work," Rivera said in Boxing Scene.
The promoter said he is counting on Donaire to get past Guillermo Rigondeaux this April to make way for the Filipino’s climb to the featherweight division.
Rivera said a fight against Donaire will be financially good for Lopez, who only has two losses in 34 fights.
"Donaire has to win and he says that he wants to climb to 126. A fight with Donaire, no doubt it's a big fight and economically it's very good. The two have said repeatedly that they would like to fight and Donaire is one of the top three best pound for pound fighters,” said Rivera.
