Filipino MMA fighter may get title shot, says analyst
MANILA – If Filipino mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Kevin Belingon keeps on winning, he might get a shot at the ONE FC bantamweight title.
Fight analyst Jason Chambers described “The Silencer” as one of the most gifted fighters to enter the ONE FC cage.
“Kevin Belingon is an absolute terror when he gets inside the cage. His wushu-based striking style is very unique and he throws heavy hands, heavy, heavy kicks and heavy knees,” said the MMA fight commentator who is best known for the History Channel show, “Human Weapon.”
In his most previous outing, Belingon knocked out previously undefeated Spaniard David Aranda with a brutal left hook to the temple.
The Team Lakay fighter is scheduled to meet another unbeaten fighter in Dae Kwan Kim, whom he will face in ONE FC’s War of Nations on Friday (March 14) in Kuala Lumpur.
A win by Belingon will make a strong case for a world bantamweight title shot. The ONE FC bantamweight strap is currently held by Brazil’s Bibiano Fernandes.
“He's one of the most talented fighters in the ONE FC roster and he really wants to keep moving up the food chain to get a crack at the bantamweight belt,” Chambers said of Belingon.
Meanwhile, Fernandes will be defending his title against Japanese fighter Masakatsu Ueda when ONE FC returns to Manila this May.
The card, titled “Rise of Heroes,” will take place at the Mall of Asia Arena on May 2.
Rise of Heroes will also feature Filipino striker Eugene Toquero who will figure in a flyweight battle against Malaysian fighter Gianni Subba.
Toquero, a fan favorite, is expected to showcase his Muay Thai skills against the Malaysian star.
