The Philippine Lawn Tennis Association (Philta) has asked to move its Davis Cup tennis tie from Pakistan to a neutral venue following the attack on Sri Lanka's cricketers, it was reported Friday.

The Philta made the request in a recent letter to the International Tennis Federation citing security concerns over playing in Pakistan, the Philippine Star newspaper said.

"It has happened in the past," Randy Villaneuva, Philta's vice president, told the paper.

The March 3 attacks in Pakistan, which killed eight people and injured seven Sri Lankan players and their assistant coach, dealt a massive blow to Pakistani cricket and left the country a pariah destination.

Up to 12 gunmen ambushed the Sri Lankan team's bus and cricket officials en route to the Gaddafi Stadium in the city of Lahore, where they were due to resume the third day's play in the second Test.

The Philippines tennis team is to play Pakistan in the Asia Oceania zone Group II tie scheduled to be held in Lahore on July 10-12.
