Pacquiao to spar with Cotto?

GLENDALE, California – While Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao took the day off to do his routine medical exams, his trainer took to the press podium to promote the showdown between Miguel Cotto and Sergio Martinez on June 7 at the Madison Square Garden in New York.

“This will be quite a run for me,” said Hall-of-Fame trainer Freddie Roach. “I just came from (Zou) Shiming in China, then the Philippines with Pacquiao and Manny is fighting on April 12th, a big fight, and then this one might be bigger than all of them.”

“I’ll have Miguel in great shape. We’ve already started the game plan,” he added.

“I know it’s going to be the best show of the year, the fight of the year,” said the Puerto Rican Cotto, who hired Roach as his trainer last year.

Pacquiao fought Cotto in 2009, winning via a 12th round technical knockout, but the two stars will now work side by side as their camps will overlap.

“They’re good friends. No problems. They’re very comfortable with each other,” said Roach, who acknowledged that Pacquiao and Cotto may possibly spar with each other.

“Will they spar with each other? Possibly. But probably not. That’s our last week of sparring and we’ll probably be tapering off a little bit,” he said.

Meanwhile, Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum said he’s been happy with the reports coming from Pacquiao’s camp as training enters its third week.

“I really am excited with Freddie saying what he says, that Manny is in great shape and in great spirits,” said Arum.

For now, Cotto will head back to Puerto Rico and will reunite with the Pacman around the first week of April as Pacquiao finishes up his training camp for his April 12 rematch against Timothy Bradley Jr.
