Gorres, Melindo victorious in 'Judgement at the Waterfront'
Filipino boxer Z “The Dream” Gorres battered former IBF minimum weight champion Roberto Carlos “Mako” Leyva of Mexico in the "Judgement at the Waterfront" main header to win via technical knockout Saturday night.
Gorres showed superb ring savvy against Leyva as he rained blows on the Mexican in the seventh round.
This prompted Leyva's trainer Raul "Jibaro" Perez to wave his arms to signal to referee Bruce McTavish that his ward has had enough, thus handing the the prestigious WBO Oriental bantamweight title to Gorres.
The ALA [Antonio L. Aldeguer] gym stalwart shook Leyva several times throughout the fight, especially in the fourth and seventh rounds.
Gorres now has 29 wins against two losses while Leyva dropped to 25-8-1.
Melindo beats Rachman
Undefeated Milan Melindo denied former world champion Muhammad Rachman a world title shot as he outpointed the Indonesian in their action-packed minimum weight match.
Melindo went toe-to-toe against the battled-tested Rachman in their 10-round, non-title bout as he proved the Indonesian boxer wrong in claiming that he’s merely good for a tune-up fight.
Judges scored the fight 97-93, 98-92 and 96-94 all in favor of the Cebu-based boxer.
Melindo, the reigning WBO Asia-Pacific and WBA Intercontinental minimum weight titlist, rattled Rachman with superb combinations, particularly his patented double left-hooks.
Although seemingly lacking in punching power, Melindo made it up by unleashing more punches against Rachman.
Both boxers electrified the crowd in the final seconds of the fight when they went on a full exchange of punches towards the final bell.
