Gomez, Duddy win in 'The Event' undercards
MANILA, Philippines - Mexican Alfonso Gomez and Irish John Duddy were victorious in their respective undercard bouts in "The Event" at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The main event features Ghana's Joshua Clottey and 7-division world champion Manny Pacquiao.
Gomez defeated fellow Mexican Jose Luis Castillo via technical knockout in Round 5 of their 10-round bout.
Gomez, the World Boxing Council (WBC) Continental Americas welterweight chamption, now has 22 wins, 4 losses and 2 draws while former WBC lightweight champion Castillo has 60 wins, 10 defeats and 1 draw.
Earlier, Duddy edged Mexican Michael Medina by split decision after 10 rounds of action. The scores were 96-93, 96-93 for Duddy and 96-93 in favor of Medina.
Duddy, also known as "Ireland's John Duddy," improved his record to 29-1. He is set to face the undefeated Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. of Mexico. "Murder Man" Medina, on the other hand, now has a record of 23-2-2.
